Inland from Mareeba in Queensland, we travelled back in time to the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park. Limestone had been weathered, dissolved and re-formed by water, since 400 million years ago, and was part of a limestone belt that extended as far north as the Palmer River. We visited limestone caves with stalactites and stalagmites and visited the old Chillagoe Smelters with relics dating back to the late 1800’s.
The caves are home to spotted pythons (which thankfully I didn’t see) and bats. Our tour guide said fossilised bones including the extinct giant kangaroo have been found in the caves.
